A HyperDock alternative that still gets updates

HyperDock added window previews, iTunes control, a calendar peek, window snapping and shortcuts to the macOS Dock, for $9.95. Its last release was in 2018 and it runs only on Intel, so people are looking for a replacement before Apple stops running Intel apps. This page is part of our uBar alternatives guide.

HyperDock is a Dock add-on from bahoom. Its last version, 1.8, was released at the end of September 2018 with the note “macOS Mojave compatibility”. It is a 64-bit Intel build; there has been no Apple Silicon version, so on an M-series Mac it depends on Rosetta. AlternativeTo lists HyperDock as Discontinued. In April 2026, users on the MacRumors forums reported that the bahoom site was inactive and asked for replacements, with Apple’s plan to drop Intel app support as the reason for looking now. The features people miss are the ones it added on top of the Dock: window previews on hover, iTunes control, a calendar peek, window snapping and Dock shortcuts.

uBar is not a Dock add-on. It replaces the Dock with a taskbar or a dock of its own, so most of what HyperDock added comes along, a few things do not, and a good deal is new. Window previews and the calendar peek carry over. iTunes control carries over in part: uBar shows track progress and artwork, but has no playback buttons. Window snapping does not carry over; if you rely on it, keep a window manager alongside uBar.

What uBar adds that HyperDock never had

• Labeled windows: every window is a tile with its title, not just an app icon.
• Window grouping set to Always, Never or Automatic.
• A bar on every monitor showing that monitor’s windows, or Mirror mode.
• Taskbar mode and dock mode, switched with one click.
• Themes (System, Light, Dark, Platinum Neue, Now Playing, Custom), sizes and up to five rows.
• Badges, App Activity (CPU and memory per app) and drag-and-drop onto tiles.
• A Universal binary, native on Apple Silicon, supporting macOS 10.13 through Tahoe.

1. Download the uBar trial. It runs for 14 days with no license.
2. Grant Accessibility and Screen Recording when uBar asks. Screen Recording is what makes window previews and titles possible; the screen is not recorded. See the Permissions section of the documentation.
3. Open uBar’s preferences and click Taskbar Defaults for labeled window tiles, or Dock Defaults if you want it to look like the Dock HyperDock was extending.
4. Pin your favorites: right-click an open app and choose Add to Favorites, or use the Add to uBar Favorites service in the Finder.
5. Hide the macOS Dock. The Terminal section of the documentation has the command that keeps it out of the way.
